In the ever-evolving world of e-commerce, staying ahead of the curve is crucial. For Romanian online businesses, a significant development has emerged: the introduction of WooPayments, now fully operable in Romania. This post delves into the benefits of WooPayments, its integration with Stripe, and how it surpasses other gateways. Furthermore, we’ll explore the synergy between WooPayments and SmartBill with the SmartBill WooCommerce Integration, especially focusing on a custom plugin I developed for seamless multi-currency transactions and invoicing.

WooPayments: A Gateway to Global Markets
When you run an online store in Romania, choosing the right payment gateway is crucial. WooPayments, integrated with Stripe, stands out for its excellent features, especially for stores wanting to sell globally.
Firstly, WooPayments handles multiple currencies with ease. Imagine a customer in Germany buying from your Romanian store in euros. With other gateways, this might be tricky, but WooPayments makes it simple. This is a big plus over other local options, which may not be as flexible with different currencies.

Security is another strong point of WooPayments, thanks to Stripe. Online safety is important, and Stripe’s involvement means your customers’ payments are secure. This peace of mind is vital in the online world.
Ease of use is also a standout feature with WooPayments. It’s so straightforward to set up and use that even your bunică (grandma in Romanian) could do it with ease – and we all know how critical her approval can be!
This user-friendliness is particularly valuable whether you’re just dipping your toes into the online business world or scaling up your existing operation. And not just for your customers, for yourself as well, since WooPayments’ interface for managing transactions and disputes is entirely within WooCommerce, unlike most other payment gateways.

Another great thing about WooPayments is clear pricing. Understanding what each transaction will cost is essential for managing your business’s money. Some gateways have complicated fees, but WooPayments keeps it clear and simple.
Lastly, the support and community around WooCommerce and WooPayments are very helpful. If you have a problem or need advice, there’s always someone to help, both from the community or the official Woo support team, included for free.
In short, WooPayments is more than just a way to take payments. It’s a complete tool that helps your store sell all over the world, with easy setup, clear costs, and great support. This makes it a top choice for your Romanian online store.
If you want to try WooPayments for your store, you can download it for free from Woo.com or directly from your site by searching “WooPayments” in Plugins > Add New.
SmartBill: Streamlining Business Operations
For any Romanian e-commerce business, managing finances can be challenging, considering the complex Romanian bureaucracy. This is where SmartBill comes into the picture as a real asset. Known for its efficiency and user-friendly approach, SmartBill offers more than just basic invoicing; it’s a complete solution for handling your business’s financial and accounting sides.
One of the key reasons SmartBill is so valuable is its simplicity. It’s designed to make accounting and invoicing easy, even if you’re not a financial expert. With SmartBill, creating invoices, tracking payments, and managing taxes become straightforward tasks. This simplicity saves you time and reduces the chance of errors, which is crucial for any growing business.
When it comes to pricing, SmartBill stands out for its competitive rates. Compared to other invoicing and accounting tools, it offers a great balance of features and affordability. This is especially important for small and medium-sized businesses that need to keep a close eye on their expenses.
Integration with WooCommerce is another area where SmartBill excels. It seamlessly connects with your WooCommerce store, meaning your sales data automatically syncs with SmartBill. This integration is a big deal because it eliminates the need to manually enter sales information into your accounting system, reducing workload and minimizing errors.

In essence, SmartBill offers a comprehensive, easy-to-use, and cost-effective solution for managing the financial aspects of your WooCommerce store. It’s not just about invoicing; it’s about giving you a clearer picture of your business finances, making it easier to manage your store and plan for the future.
You can sign-up for a 30-days free trial of SmartBill. Once you sign-up, you can install the SmartBill WooCommerce Integration by downloading it and installing it manually or by installing it directly from your WooCommerce site from Plugins > Add New.
Bridging the Gap: SmartBill and Multi-Currency Invoicing
While SmartBill is a robust tool for managing finances, one area where it needed a bit more functionality was in handling multi-currency invoicing, especially for WooCommerce integration. This is where a custom solution I developed comes into play, specifically designed to bridge this gap.

The standard SmartBill WooCommerce integration works well but doesn’t support invoicing in multiple currencies. This can be a limitation for stores that deal with international customers. Recognizing this need, I created a plugin that extends SmartBill’s capabilities to include multi-currency invoicing. This development was initially for my own store, Elemental Beacon, but I’ve decided to share it with the wider community in the spirit of open-source.
Here’s what you need to know about this plugin:
- Free to Use: The plugin is available for free. It’s a product of my initiative to enhance the functionality of SmartBill for WooCommerce users who deal with international transactions.
- Use at Your Own Risk: While I’ve tested this plugin for my store, it’s provided “as is.” This means that if you choose to use it for your store, it’s at your own risk. I encourage users to test it thoroughly on a staging site before using it on production, to ensure it meets their needs.
- No Support Provided: As this plugin was a personal project, I don’t offer official support for it. However, given its open-source nature, users are welcome to modify or adapt it as they see fit.
- Reliance on SmartBill Configuration: For the plugin to work effectively, it’s crucial to have your SmartBill integration properly set up first. After installing this plugin, you’ll need to configure SmartBill’s settings in your WooCommerce store. In SmartBill > Setari, set the option Moneda documentului emis in SmartBill to Preluata din WooCommerce. This step is vital as it ensures that the invoicing reflects the correct currency used in transactions.
- Depending on your store, you might want to also set the option Cota TVA produse to Preluata din WooCommerce so that all the VAT rates are automatically retrieved from WooCommerce and not the ones set in SmartBill. This is useful when selling outside of the EU.
After installing the plugin, you will see in your Orders table a new button:

Using this button, you can create a SmartBill invoice in the currency of the order, regardless of the main currency of your store.
If you happen to be a SmartBill developer reading this article, please consider adding this feature directly into your plugin so that we do not need to rely on custom ones, like mine!
Why This Matters for Your Business
This integration is more than a technical achievement; it’s a strategic advantage. By accommodating multiple currencies, you can attract a broader international customer base, enhance user experience, and streamline your accounting processes.
The integration of WooPayments and SmartBill, fortified by the custom SmartBill Multi Currency Support plugin, represents a significant stride for Romanian e-commerce.
